Adopt-A-Stream Program Volunteer [ More info ]
Adopt-A-Stream groups sign on to adopt a section of a stream, riparian area or wetland, and to care for this space as part of a long-term commitment. Participants are lead through the steps required to develop small-scale community stewardship projects and volunteer their time to implement the work. Groups are encourage to select an adoption site in an area where they have some local knowledge. A wide array of projects could be completed at adoption sites; some examples include tree plantings, wetland restoration and creation projects, stream bank stabilization, fish and wildlife habitat enhancement, riparian zone rehabilitation, fish barrier mitigation, garbage cleanups, and fisheries and wildlife monitoring. Adopting a section of a stream or wetland area provides an exceptional hands-on learning experience for all ages and provides volunteers a chance to be actively involved in environmental efforts in their community.

Groups of volunteers may donate community service hours to assist with beautifying the parks and green spaces within Markham. Maps, gloves and garbage bags are provided. Suitable for church, community or corporate groups. Groups must provide their own leaders to supervise people as well as refreshments.
Other stewardship activities are possible depending on time of year and group size.
