| Description | Best Buddies is a student based volunteer program designed to foster friendships between high school students with and without intellectual disabilities. High School chapters are active in over 550 schools worldwide in 28 countries, on six continents. Best Buddies Canada establishes chapters in secondary schools wherever there are interested students. Each chapter is managed by a student volunteer, called a Chapter President, with assistance from Best Buddies Program Managers and in-school Staff Advisors. Each chapter works with a Host Site Coordinator, a member of the Special Education Department of the high school or a member of a community organization working in the field of intellectual disabilities. The Host Site Coordinator and Chapter President match students in Buddy Pairs according to a personality profile and an interview. All student volunteers complete an application, submit reference questionnaires and undergo a criminal records check. Peer Buddies & Buddies make contact with each other once a week in person, by phone or by e-mail. One-to-one activities (going for coffee, taking a walk, etc.) take place twice a month. All the Buddy Pairs at a chapter get together four times per year for a group event. |
