DescriptionFinancial assistance (welfare) to help with the cost of basic needs items * Employment Placement Program to help Ontario Works participants find paid employment * Social Assistance participants may volunteer for community agencies to gain experience and contacts * Homemakers and nurses services are provided to financially eligible community members who are temporarily ill or who have a permanent illness or disability 
 
* For extraordinary items or services, a client may receive additional discretionary financial assistance known as Other Benefits: 
* Surgical supplies and dressings, medical supplies; prosthetic appliances 
* Guide dog benefit 
* Emergency dental or optical services; dental and vision coverage for children under 18 
* Special diets; diabetic supplies 
* Pregnancy and breast feeding allowance 
* Funerals and burials 
* Medical transportation; moving allowances 
* Winter clothing allowances for children under 18 
 
* Programs Available: 
* Emergency Shelters: provide temporary shelter for individuals and families in crisis * does not operate emergency shelters * refers applicants to the appropriate location and helps shelter residents by providing financial support while they remain in the shelter * Social Assistance Case Coordinators also visit the shelters to take applications for Social Assistance 
 
* Employment Programs: help participants find employment and gain financial independence * help match employers with skilled employees * Must meet Ontario Works eligibility requirements 
 
* Homemakers and Nurses Services Program: covers the cost of an in-home homemaker or nurse for community members who are eligible under the program and who are temporarily ill or who have a permanent illness or disability, helping them to continue living independently in the community * Call 1-888-256-1112 to apply for homemaking and nursing services * Must meet financial criteria  
 
* Learning, Earning and Parenting Program for Young Parents: The Learning, Earning and Parenting (LEAP) program is a mandatory program for young parents on Ontario Works under age 18 and voluntary for young parents under age 22 * Encourages young parents to finish high school and increase vocational skills and supports healthy child development by assisting young parents to acquire parenting skills * Provides assistance with child care costs while the parent is in school or extracurricular activities, and assists with additional financial resources based on individual service plans * Must meet Ontario Works eligibility requirements and attend school regularly 
 
* Transition Homes: transition homes provide temporary shelter for women who are victims of abuse (with or without children) * Community Services and Housing helps eligible transition home residents by providing a monthly allowance * Social Assistance Case Coordinators also visit the shelters to take applications for Social Assistance
