| Description | Area office Scarborough Town Centre Administers several programs including: CANADA PENSION PLAN: (CPP); social insurance program provides protection against the contingencies of retirement provides for an earnings-related retirement pension payable as early as age 60 Monthly pensions are payable to disabled contributors and dependent children Death benefits are paid in a lump sum to the estate following the death of a qualified contributor benefits are payable in the form of a monthly pension for the surviving spouse and monthly benefits for dependent children FAMILY ALLOWANCES: (FA); supplements the income of Canadian families by providing monthly payments for children under the age of 18 who are supported by their parents or guardians OLD AGE SECURITY: (OAS); monthly benefits are paid to all persons 65 years of age and over who satisfy certain basic Canadian residence requirements (be a Canadian citizen or a legal resident of Canada on the day preceding approval of application) A minimum of 10 years of residence in Canada after reaching age 18 is required to receive a pension in Canada To receive this pension you must apply to Health and Welfare Canada GUARANTEED INCOME SUPPLEMENT: (GIS); additional monthly payments may be made to pensioners in need To find out if you are entitled to get GIS you must fill out a GIS application form An application for GIS is mailed payment Application forms are then sent each year SPOUSE'S ALLOWANCE AND WIDOWED SPOUSE'S ALLOWANCE: (SA) A 60 to 64 year old spouse of a person who is getting OAS may be eligible for Spouse's Allowance You must fill out an application each year if you still need SA payments will be discontinued | |||
